The original subject of my recent hen pictures is a little black hen, Hops, so named because she “hops the fence daily,” according to the friend who named her. She is a Swedish heritage breed of melanistic chicken called Svart Hona, which means “black hen.” These birds are solid black both inside and out: inside their mouths and bones, too. Except, chickens, which have tetrachromatic vision, see more colors than we do. So I have given her colors and patterns.
